Marianne’s Savvy Motivational Decluttering Tips!
1. One In, One Out
Every time you open a drawer, cupboard, cubby, or closet, make it a rule to remove at least one item you no longer need. Chances are, you won’t stop at just one — and that’s the beauty of it! This little habit adds up to big results over time.
2. Set a Declutter Timer
Cleaning up doesn’t have to take all day! Set a timer for a small, manageable amount of time — even 10 or 15 minutes can make a difference. You’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish in short bursts without feeling overwhelmed.
3. Use the Three-Box Method
Grab three boxes and label them: Keep, Donate, and Trash. As you sort through your stuff, drop each item into the appropriate box. This makes decisions quick and keeps you moving forward. Bonus tip: Get a friend or family member involved for an extra pair of hands and some moral support!
4. Turn Up the Music
Make cleaning fun by cranking up your favorite tunes! Upbeat songs can boost your mood and keep your energy high while you work. Some family favorites to try: Cleaning Windows by Van Morrison, Stay Up Late by Talking Heads, and yes, even Barney’s Clean Up song if you’re feeling nostalgic!
5. Clean During Your Peak Hours
We all have a time of day when we feel most productive and focused. Use that sweet spot to your advantage when tackling your cleaning projects. Whether it’s early morning or late at night, working when you’re most energized makes the process faster and easier.
6. Keep a Donation Bin Handy
Place a designated donation bin in your basement, garage, or closet. Whenever you find something you no longer need, drop it in the bin. When it’s full, take it straight to a local donation center — no second-guessing!
7. Invest in Smart Storage Solutions
Decluttering is easier when everything has a place! Invest in smart, space-saving storage solutions to keep your home neat and organized. Think stackable bins, drawer organizers, and multi-functional furniture. I love stylish baskets for quick cleanups and chic shelving that adds both storage and personality. Here’s a link to my favorite storage solutions.
