savvy talks: how often should you be washing your bed sheets?

We all sleep on some kind of bed (even if it’s the couch after a Netflix binge). But few of us really know how often we should be washing what’s on it. Spoiler: it’s probably more than you think.

Dermatologists say dirty bedding isn’t just gross—it can clog your pores, inflame your skin, and trigger allergies or asthma. Why? Because while you sleep, you’re shedding dead skin cells that attract dust mites. Add in sweat, pollen, and the occasional late-night snack crumb, and your bed is basically a germ magnet.

So, what’s the real sweet spot for laundry day? Let’s break it down.

🛌 Sheets

  • At minimum: Once a week.

  • More often if: It’s hot and you’re sweating, you have allergies or pets in bed, or you’re sick. Every 3–4 days may be best in those cases.

  • Pro tips:

    • Wash cotton sheets in hot water, but treat silk/satin gently.

    • Showering before bed cuts down on grime.

    • Keep an extra set of sheets handy to swap quickly.

🛋️ Comforters & Blankets

  • If touching your skin: Weekly.

  • If layered over sheets: Every 2–3 months.

  • Pro tips:

    • Check labels—wool usually can’t be machine washed.

    • If it doesn’t fit in your washer, take it to a laundromat or dry cleaner.

    • A duvet cover saves your sanity—it’s way easier to wash.

😴 Pillows & Pillowcases

  • Pillowcases: At least once a week (they can have millions of bacteria colonies in just 7 days). Wash more often if you have sensitive skin or allergies.

  • Pillows: Once a month to once a season. Most are machine washable, but check labels.

  • Pro tips:

    • Shower before bed and practice good hair hygiene.

    • Use a hair wrap or scarf to reduce oil/product transfer.

🛡️ Mattress Pads

  • Wash every 2–3 months.

  • Cotton pads can usually go in the machine. Wool requires dry cleaning. Memory foam? Spot-clean only.

🛏️ Your Mattress

  • Let it breathe whenever you strip the bed.

  • Vacuum 2–3 times a year.

  • Sprinkle with baking soda, let sit, then vacuum to freshen.

  • Flip it and do the other side too.

  • For deep cleaning, hire a pro every few years.

Bottom Line

Clean bedding = better sleep, clearer skin, and fewer allergy flare-ups. A little laundry goes a long way toward making your bed the cozy, healthy haven it’s supposed to be.
