From Marianne: Are People Getting Ruder?

Lately I have zero tolerance for rude people. Maybe I'm getting older. Maybe people are getting ruder. Obviously, I'm going with people are getting ruder. And half the time they don’t even know they’re doing it.

Like watching videos on your phone WITH THE SOUND ON. I don't want to hear your TikTok. I don't even want to hear my own TikTok that loud. Same with the phone that announces every single text. Ding. Ding. DING. We get it. You're popular. Then there's the elevator. Let people OUT before you get IN. This is not advanced math. Also we're trying to get out of the exact place you're trying to get into. Help us help you.

Restaurants deserve their own category. If we're sharing an appetizer and your fork has been in your mouth, congratulations, it's your fork now. Find the serving spoon. And splitting the bill. I'm not counting who had sparkling water versus tap. But if you had three martinis and a bottle of wine and I had none, "let's just split it evenly" is a much better deal for you than for me.

My personal favorite: people who think saying something louder makes them more right. It does not. Although apparently it does make the rest of us stop talking, so maybe that's the strategy.

But here's the one that actually bothers me most. Not noticing when someone has gone out of their way for you. It's usually not even ingratitude. It's just not stopping long enough to notice what someone else did, or what it took for them to do it. And maybe that's what all these little things have in common. Pay attention. Other people are here.

I'm sure I do plenty of things that make people crazy too. Don't ask Bob, he's got a list. But now I want yours.

What's the rude thing people do that drives you absolutely nuts? Hit reply and tell me, I read every response. And if I do it too, maybe just keep that part to yourself.
